Hanger 1

Hanger 1

A replaceable hanger can be replaced in the event of damage (crash or the like) that can cause misalignment of the rear derailleur and cassette. This misalignment can result in skipping gears, incorrect shifting and even catastrophic failure.

Replacing the derailleur hanger in most cases are the easiest and most effective way to remedy post crash gear issues.

A derailleur hanger is designed to break or bend, in the event of a crash, as a first line of defense, preventing your frame or derailleur from breaking or bending. This small part is easier and cheaper to replace than a bent frame or broken derailleur.

FAQ

How do I know if my hanger is bent?
The first indication will be gear problems, sometimes present after an incident, where the rear derailleur may have received impact. Take the bike to your LBC for evaluation. Hangers can be straigthened.

Hangers can be straightened, why do I need a spare?
Perhaps less often, but hangers do brake. The result of which is catastrophic to gearing. Hangers are small enough to keep spare and definitely important enough to have at least one spare per bike.

How do I replace a hanger?
Hangers are fixed to the frame, and require removal of rear wheel and rear derailleur, to access the mounitng bolts. Inspect the drivetrain for any signs of damage consistent with the damaged hanger.
